Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Raichur district on Friday has enthused not only the youth Congress brigade but also a select group of dwellers from Ashihal thanda, one of the most progressive thandas in the country located in the district. The Youth Congress leader is scheduled to visit the thanda during his district tour. Ashihal thanda, a scheduled caste lambani locality, has given birth to a number of high-profile IAS, IPS and KAS officers and senior government officials. Rahul is likely to make a brief halt here. “If Rahul is unable to enter the thanda due to time constraint, a select group of women from the thanda is expected to rush to nearby Mudugal village where he will interact with people on issues related to women,” Congress sources said. Ashihal thanda is a model village for other localities. In the last several decades, many families here strived for social and economical development and succeeded in making it a 90 per cent literate thanda. More than 350 government officials hail here. Although many officers have to move out of the thanda to their workplaces, most of them make it a point to attend the famous annual Durgadevi jathra in February. Rahul will also visit Badihal thanda, which is 100 per cent illiterate. At Malat, Kavtal and Sirvar villages near Raichur, he will interact with a selected group of ZP, TP and GP members. He will wind up his Raichur tour after unveiling his father’s statue at the Rajiv Gandhi Superspeciality Hospital.
Thanda’s pride:
*Narendra Naik, completed IAS in 2006-07 (370th rank)
*Yateeshwar Naik, IPS. He died in Delhi some years ago
