People who practice Dowry System should be boycotted socially!

Dear Sir,

E ek jun rit apne samajem chalrich jen kai toy thamanu chavach.

As the Child marriages (both bride and groom are young) were prevalent in India, the brides parents offer dowry to the grooms family in the form of money and materials. This is in order to help support the livelihood of the bride until groom grows up to support her himself. The opposite of this is called Kanyashulkam.

One of the biggest menaces of the Indian society is the dowry system. This fact that it is condemned by every modern citizen of this country and yet it still flourishes at a very large scale in our society is a testimony of how deeply rooted this system is in the Banjara society.

The government has taken many steps to stop the abominable practice of dowry. The Dowry Prohibition Act, passed in 1961, prohibits the request, payment or acceptance of dowry, where “dowry” is defined as a gift demanded or given as a precondition for a marriage. Asking or giving of dowry can be punished by an imprisonment of up to six months, or a fine of up to Rs. 5000. Many anti-dowry legislations have also been made to tackle the dowry system. The media has also done its bit by showcasing the cases of dowry and its ill-effects.

Today dowry is not the innocent practice that it started out as but has turned into a social menace that cannot be reverted back to its original form; hence it must be eradicated from our society permanently.

Many young women commit suicide because of this system. Their parents can not collect the required funds. To fulfill the demands of the girl’s inlaws they borrow money or even sometimes they put their property on mortgage.

It has become truly difficult to find the suitable match for the girl without giving the demanded dowry. Nowadays, marriage has become a kind of business and misuse of girl’s parents. Even the rich parents of the boy do not feel shame in begging dowry.

The system of dowry in our Banjara samaj is a very serious matter and a black spot on our society.

Dowry system is against the law of equality between man and woman. Today dowry is considered as the crime, both giving and taking. Thousands of cases has being observed every year but only few of them put to court for punishment. Apart from laws, steps should be taken for the abolishment of Dowry System. We should try to involve as many as people as we can for the erasing dowry system. And this crucial movement should be taken to each village and to every corner of the country. The . Women association should also take steps against dowry system.

This evil should be fought on both the levels of rules and society equally. A very enthusiastic party line and movement should be taken into consideration for the abolition of this evil system.

Best regards,

Nagdev M. Nayak

Dowry system is one of the main reason for selling girl childs: Varsha Chowhan (Medical Student, A.P.)

Respected Kamal sir,

I would like to bring some facts, how our poor Banjara community families selling girl childs in Andhra Pradesh.

In Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh some of our Banjara families are selling girl childs to other due to financial problems. Recently we know through newspapers and TV channels, that some districts in Telangana regions like Nalgonda, Medak, Mehaboobnagar, Karimnagar and Nizamabad, our Banjara mothers simply they are answering the questions of the media persons that they are unable to feed babies due to financial problems, particularly girl childs.

Because of the following  reasons they are selling girl Childs in Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh:

1. In Telangana  90% of our Banjaras are depending on seasonal agriculture.
Irrigation facilities are poor in this region.
2. Taking loan from private agencies for buying seeds and fertilizers. Private agencies are charging high interest rates. They are unable to repay the loans because of failure of crops due to drought or floods.
3. Generally in Telangana region Banjara community is spending more money for liquor and non veg for each and every festival and other rituals.
4. In India ours is male damination family, this is also one of the reason for not showing interest in girl childs.
5. Dowry system is one of the main reason for selling girl childs in Telangana Region. Bride's family  minimum 2 lakh dowry they have to give even a illiterate groom for  marriage. In our community dowry system is very high When compared with other regions like Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra.
6. In India govt. has banned  prenatal diagnostic, but in urban cities our Banjara families are doing female foeticides.
7. As per 2010 census in Andhra Pradesh male to female ratio is 100:73 in Banjara community.
Its a time to wake up and  protect girl childs in our community.

Govind Guru Banjara

A massacre bigger in scale than that at Jallianawala Bagh had taken place at Maangarh, where the 1500 Adivasis shot dead in a single night.

In the second half of 19th century Govind Guru, besides leading Adivasi movements not only against English rule, but also against native kings and the Begari (forcing village workers to work without wages) practices of jagirdars, had spearheaded social reform movements. Apart from launching anti liquor and pro-female education movements, he also fought against prevalent social evils and violence. He was born in a Banjara family. He established sanmap sabhas among Bhil and Garasia tribes. On the complaint of the native Rajput Rajas, the British raided his dhuni and massacred 1500 Bhils overnight. This massacre was bigger in scale than that of Jallianawala Bagh. This incident took place in Banswara located in Maangarh. Some times in 1880-81. He was imprisoned.

In Rajasthan, Adivasi writers, through their research and writing, have been able to resurrect the revolt of Gobind Guru and the martyrdom of Kalibai. Ramesh Chandra Vadera and Khemraj Pargi have traced the history of Gobind Guru and Kalibai through folk songs. Hariram Meena has also explored this theme in his article. Today we know that a massacre bigger in scale than that at Jalianawala had taken place at Maangarh, where the English, in connivance with Rajput chieftains of Rajasthan and Gujarat, had shot dead 1500 Adivasis in a single night in the hills of Maangarh. But this incident remained buried in history. It is only now that it is being documented.

The movement that Gobind Guru, a staunch advocate of education, had spearheaded for establishing of schools for boys and girls, for non payment of taxes to the government and interest to moneylenders, was kept alive by people in their folk songs and folktales; now these are being penned on paper and sculpted in stone by the Adivasi artists.

The following song by Gobind Guru that reverberates through the nooks and corners of Rajasthan turned out to be a prophecy for freedom:–

O Buratia I refuse to acquiesce

My writ runs in Delhi

In Ahmedabad my jajam (seat)

My armies in Jaambu

In Maangarh my dhuni (base)

I recognize him as the chief

Who proclaims

The authority of Gobind Guru (With thanks from Ramnika Foundation)

Procedure for admitting children to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas

Dear Kamal ji ,

Thanks for publishing my e-mail in voice of Goaars. In continuation for admitting our children to jawahar navodaya vidyalayas (residential schools run by Govt of India), I have received/receiving mails regarding more information. I had replied many mails, even though for the benefit of  majority,  here I am giving details. Please keep it available for all the times in web page.

Jawahar navodaya vidyalaya's ( shortly called JNV's) are the resedential schools providing education from 6'th standard to 12 'th standards ,spread in all districts ( 1 or 2 each ) of all the states (except tamilnadu) through out the country, run by government of India. These are the free residential co- educational schools  having seperate hostel for boys and girls , with round the clock water supply, good sanitation, personnel hygiene facilities, supervised round the clocks (even durig night) by  teachers.

Each school  has a  well equiped computer labs , VSAT connectivity( internet), laboratories, Libraries with varieties of monthly journals, primary health centre with doctors facility, projectors for e-teaching/learning process, well equiped physical eqiupment, sports items. The campuses are generally greenish with pleasant harmonic atmosphere. There is an extra care and protection for girl child. It is a boon for a girl , if she get selected.

A child currently in 5'th standard of that academic year  can  apply for joinig JNV's. Applications are issued in the month of august/ september of that academic year for every year. Applications can be obtained free of cost from the head master of the school where a child is presently studyin in 5'th standard. Applications can also be obtained from block education officer/ disrtict education officer/ principal of JNV of that district of that state.

A  child who is  studying in 5'th standard in a school,  can apply only the JNV of that district.  He can not apply for other district or other state.

There will be a selection test for admission. a child can prepare himself by reading all the books from 3rd to 5th standard. (Refering NCERT text books of classes 3-5 is good for exam preperation). Guides are available in the market as jawahar navodaya selection guide.

The medium of selection test is both in english  OR  regional language of that state. Selection test generally falls in 1st /2nd sunday of February every year.

After the selection, all the facilities like books, notebooks personal hygeinic items , uniforms , shoes etc are providing to them free of cost. There is sepearte teaching for both slow learners and high achivers , so that they can further excel.

It is my sincere request among all the learned goaar bhai's that this message can be communicated orally to our illiterate parents , so that a talented poor goaar child get the excellent education free of cost from 6 - 12 . I assure that  the child will become either a doctor/engineer/corporator/civil servant of higher rank  in future.

For further information one can see the website regarding location of JNV of that district/state . www.navodaya.nic.in,  .

Thanks,

All India Banjara Seva Sangh should expand its functioning: A Suggestion from Dr. Vijay Pawar

All India Banjara Seva Sangh should expand its functioning. It has to work hard for involvement of common Banjara people in a democratic way. Till today the image of Sangha is get together of Banajara celebrities in the meetings. It has to expand itself to Tanda level which is the basic unit of Banjara. Registration of membership should be open. There should be democratic way of selection of office bearers right from basic units to national level. There is need of an official website of the All India Banjara Seva Sangh.
