Governor Rameshwar Thakur inaugurates Kalamela of ST Community organised by Karnataka Pradesh Banjara (Lambani) Seva Sangha at Ravindra Kalakshetra in Bangalore on Sunday
BANGALORE March 2, 2008: Earlier inaugurating the seminar Governor Rameshwar Thakur said that the society and the government should help the nomads and the tribal communities to "preserve their distinct identity even the wake of modernization." He said "we appear to have been attracted more towards others' cultures than making efforts to preserve and improvise our own way of living."
He said the people of the community have traditionally been moving from place to place and therefore deprived of education, immovable property and other comforts of life. There was an urgent need of improving their standard of living and education was the most important tool to achieve that he added.
Presiding over the function former Chief Minister and president of the State Samajwadi Party S. Bangarappa said the formation of rules and acts that govern the forests and restricted areas need to be compassionately done especially when it might harm the interests of the marginalised classes like the Banjaras and other triblas. The most important aspect of the modern civilised life was to protect the livelihood of marginalised classes. He said if the governments and policy makers were not in a position to protect the livelihood of the tribal communities it should be compensated adequately by giving alternative methods of livelihood.
The seminar witnessed presentation of papers by experts coming from all over the state. The paper on 'livelihood security, problems and challenges' by D.B.Nayak of Gulburga Kannada University highlighted preservation of traditional livelihood pattern of the nomads and tribals.
Another paper on 'effects of education, literature and civilisation on tribal life' by senior faculty of Kannada University of Hampi K.M. Maitry outlined the need of bringing the nomads and tribal into the mainstay of the society by educating their youth.
Tribal communities need to be rehabilitated in their rightful habitats closer to forests and given rights over using the forest judiciously for eking out a livelihood called experts at a seminar on the tribals and lambanis organised by the Karnataka State Lambani (Karnataka Pradesh Banjara) Seva Sangha in the capital here today March 2, 2008.

Every Goaar can send his Family Tree for Publishing
Family tree among banjaras is being recorded in a book. To include your family tree in that book, send details to the address specified in the letter below, or to my email ID. For more details, go through the letter of Thulasiram Naik. C.T Anand (Email: anandct82@yahoo.co.in)
Letter from Thulasiram Naik: With the blessings of our elders, I am intending to record the geneological history of Banjaras (Lambanis) in a Book. This requires Family-tree information. As we all know that, there are clans in Banjara namely Pammar (Pawar), Chavan (Chogath), Rathod (Bhukya), Vadatiya (Jadhav) and others. I will be taking up one by one. Hence, I am starting with Pammar's (Pawar) geneology. In this regard, I have started collecting family-tree information from pammar families. I call upon all the Pammars consisting of 12 brethern to provide their family-trees to my below address, for the purpose of recording it in the book. Any pammar living in a Thanda, city or any part of the world can send his family-tree.
Purpose behind the project project: People take birth, live and die but their family-tree and their history of ancestors is not recorded as expected. The memories of ancestors is getting faded generation by generation through the ages. For example, if a grandson asks questions about family-tree and their history, the answer at the most we tell is name of the father, grand-father and fore-father, with this we ask him to shut up since we do not have details in depth further. Also, regarding the relationship between our mother, grand-mother and female relatives which is of prime importance is usually neglected.
Hence, the collections of the family-tree and their history of ancestors to be brought out in "Memoir" written record book. I hope, such maintenance will be continued further by the younger generations.
To identify them, it is difficult for me alone. Hence, I request you all to contact them and apprise the philosophy of this theme and get materials for further process. Such materials recieved by me will not be altred/changed without their consent. In this connections, they have right to know, discuss, guide and direct me to do in this process. Required to send the family-tree of their ancestors (names), the approximate age they lived, any adventures, name and fame if achieved by them, if displaced; name of places need to be mentioned. In addition to this, the names of the daughters, their husbands, the clan and native place to which they belong, would provide a full fledged information to build up a family-tree. The informations called for, may be sent within January 31st, 2008 approximately. Here, your co-operation is highly solicited.
